Right by the Arctic Circle, in the middle of Swedish Lapland, lies the quaint little village of Jokkmokk. This is where Care of Gerd have been manufacturing natural, high-quality skin and haircare products for almost ten years now. The unique Arctic climate is an important part of Care of Gerd, their philosophy, and their products, and many of the raw materials and scents used in their products come from the Arctic nature surrounding them. The old pine forests, the deep lakes, and the lush fields of wild blueberries and cloudberries are both natural resources of materials, as well as a great source of inspiration for founders Anna-Lena and Johan.

Care of Gerd was founded in 2008 by siblings Johan and Anna-Lena. Both of them had a long history of working with both skin and haircare, and the more they got to know about the products they were using, and what they contained, the more determined they got to create a more natural brand of their own. One of their first creations was Blueberry Vanilla, a nourishing body oil made from cold pressed vanilla oil and blueberry seed oil.

Organic skin care with natural ingredients

Care of Gerd products are all organic, made with natural ingredients only. For example, their haircare series is completely free of parabens, sulphates, PEGs, and silicone. Instead of sticking to the surface of the hair, nourishing natural haircare penetrates each strand of hair, making the hair glossy from the inside out. Using products that don’t contain chemicals is naturally better for both people and the environment, with less chemicals going down the drain and ending up in our lakes and rivers.

Creating and selling natural skincare simply feels natural to Johan and Anna-Lena. Having worked in both hairdressing and skincare therapy, Anna-Lena and Johan know just how many products we use on a daily basis. Showering, brushing your teeth, moisturizing and perhaps putting on make-up makes for a lot of products before even getting out of the bathroom in the morning!

How an eco-friendly upbringing set the tone for the future

When the siblings were growing up in Jokkmokk, their mother Gerd made sure both kids knew how to cook healthy, real food, and how to care for animals and the environment. Gerd would make dinner from scratch, using natural, local ingredients, and forage herbs and berries from the forest. Of course she’d also bake her own bread. The term organic wasn’t really a thing back then, and nobody really spoke about sustainable living. Still, it’s exactly what Gerd was teaching her kids, how to make real food, with local ingredients.

To Johan and Anna-Lena, mama Gerd was a fantastic role model, and of course a great inspiration for their brand- Care of Gerd. The water used for Care of Gerd products comes from the lake Tjalmejaur outside of Jokkmokk, just next to where Anna-Lena lives. It doesn’t get much more local than that! According to Anna-Lena, Jokkmokk, and nature here, is part of them, and part of C/o Gerd. The town itself, the people here, and Arctic nature, is what makes Care of Gerd the brand it is today.

Today, C/o Gerd create products with scents and ingredients that are better for both people and the environment. Everything is chosen with great care, all the way from the ingredients, to how each product is packaged, with many of their product containers being made from sugarcane instead of plastic. An active choice in their journey towards building a more sustainable society.
